What the borshch map is

This is not a “10 places with good borshch” listicle written once and forgotten. The borshch map is an open ranking: every serving is scored by the person who ate it, scores keep arriving, and a venue's position moves on its own. So “the best borshch” here is not an editor's opinion — it is the median of the opinions of people who paid for that bowl.

The map is free, carries no ads and sells no places in the ranking. A venue cannot buy a position: only people give scores, and every criterion is shown separately, so you can see exactly what a bowl earned its number for.

How a bowl is scored

Seven criteria, one question per screen. Together they produce an overall score out of ten:

• Meatiness — how much meat there is, and whether it is well cooked.
• Beetiness — how clearly the beetroot comes through in quantity, colour and aroma.
• Saltiness — whether it is well balanced: neither bland nor over-salted.
• Thickness — how rich the bowl is: does the spoon stand up in it, or is it thin?
• Aftertaste — whether a pleasant, full flavour stays with you afterwards.
• Presentation — whether it looks appetising and tidy, and what comes alongside it.
• Overall — how much you liked the bowl overall.

The best-rated bowls on the map right now

Bowls with at least 3 ratings, from the highest score down. The threshold is deliberate: one opinion is not a ranking, and without it the top would always be some freshly added bowl with a single ten.

The numbers are recalculated daily from the open API, so the table reflects the date at the top of this page rather than the day it was written.

The borshch map city by city

Kyiv has the most rated bowls — the map there is already dense. Elsewhere it is still filling up, and every new rating visibly moves the picture. The full list, sortable by score, price and distance, is in the list of bowls.

How this differs from searching in Maps

In Google Maps the rating belongs to the venue — all of it at once: the interior, the waiters, the parking, the delivery time. Here the rating belongs to the dish. A four-star restaurant can serve a mediocre bowl, and a bistro with no reviews at all can serve the best one in town. The borshch map answers exactly one question: where the borshch is good — not where it is pleasant to sit.

How many bowls are on the map?

Rated: 105, in 104 venues across 11 cities. The database holds 277 records in total: the rest are waiting for their first rating.

How do I put my own bowl on the map?

Open the map, find the venue (or add a new one), enter the name of the bowl, its price and weight, and add a photo. After that the bowl appears on the map for everyone. Saving a rating needs an account — otherwise there is no way to tell a hundred ratings from one person apart from a hundred different ones.

Is it free?

Yes. No ads, no paid positions in the ranking, no subscription.

Can I rate a bowl that is already on the map?

Yes, and that is the most useful thing you can do: a score backed by one person is far weaker than a score backed by five. Every new rating sharpens the median.
